My Kingdom for an IHOP…

Trying to find a full Irish breakfast at a reasonable price convenient to Rathfarnham/Terenure/Harolds Cross (by bus) and not in a pub on a Sunday afternoon around 2.30pm turns out to be like searching for the Holy Grail. We had tried the Castle Inn in Rathfarnham, but they seem to cater more for the Sunday-afternoon drinks-while-watching-the-match crowd than late Sunday brunch. Brasserie Sixty6 was suggested, but €11 for a full breakfast does not good value make, in my humble opinion. Rathmines is pretty well out, thanks to abusive older wimmin at the bus stop. We also tried the Mayfield Deli & Eatery in Terenure, but they only serve brunch foods (French toast or Eggs Benedict, no fried eggs) until they run out (running next door to pick up more eggs in An Siopa Beag being too much to ask, I suppose). Water was served in a jug with sauce spilled on the side of it (ick) and hygiene may not have been up to our expectations. I’d love to try the Spoon Cafe in Terenure, but they’re not open Sundays; Brambles only serves breakfast until 12pm, and Brady’s serves all-day breakfast every day except Sunday, as does Rosie O’Grady’s. Supermacs on O’Connell Street does all-day breakfast, but doesn’t exactly appeal. Kylemore in Rathmines has turned into fully self-service, which isn’t what we’re looking for either.

If anyone has any ideas, I’d be eternally grateful. Meanwhile, I shall continue pining for an IHOP or a Denny’s

Update 19 June: We may have a winner (until we’re back across the pond, anyway) – Peggy Kellys in Harolds Cross does an excellent all-day breakfast with all the trimmings at reasonable prices. We tried it out today and had great service, and were pleased to discover that the restaurant area is distinctly separate from the pub section, so you’re not surrounded by folks having a few pints while watching the match. Highly recommended.

  1. Good breakfast can be so hard to find! I must say, that is one thing my new (temporary) home has in spades… There is an excellent diner a half-mile walk from my front door (which is a difficult thing to say in a town that is 99.9% auto-oriented), and a handful of other local gems if we get tired of the nearby place… Come visit and we’ll get good eggs! πŸ™‚

    • Ah, you lucky thing! *jealous* πŸ™‚ So glad you have a great breakfast place nearby – I’ll definitely have to visit! πŸ™‚ (course, there’s nowhere quite like the Station House, I reckon… *snigger*)
