Advice for a comedy fan at Edinburgh festival/fringe 2012

Balmoral Hotel Edinburgh 2

A friend recently asked my advice for planning a trip to Edinburgh for the festival in August- which of course means as usual I had to share my wisdom here…

My two cents:

If they’re at the festival, do not miss Reginald D. Hunter (I love him), Jason Cook, Danny Bhoy, Steve Hughes or Josie Long (wonderful wonderful wonderful).

I know you may want to, but don’t go see all the comedians you can see at home anyway. See the top couple you really love, and spend the rest of your time seeing acts you wouldn’t normally see at home. Sure, do flyering for the comedians you know – but you have a limited time and thousands of shows to choose from. They’ll understand. I promise.

Go see something different. Try something outside your comfort zone. I can’t recommend strongly enough going to at least one play where the actors are giving out flyers outside the venue if they’re friendly.

Definitely don’t forget about the Book Festival – it may turn out to be the best thing you do in Edinburgh this summer. It’s well worth even just going to the book festival area for a coffee and an hour’s people-watching.

Hike Arthur’s Seat. No, I’m not kidding.

Don’t miss Gordon’s Trattoria, even if you can only get in later in the evening for dessert (they do tend to be busy, but awesome). Tell ’em the banana-splits-and-coffee lady sent ya.

Hit up the Well Hung & Tender angus beef vendor at the Gilded Balloon Teviot food court area outside. Hang onto the coffee mug- it’s free, and usually refillable.

Don’t forget to see the sights. It’s what makes Edinburgh unique. The bus tours from Waverley Bridge are fantastic, and the one to the Firth of Forth was a particular favorite of mine.

Good accommodation can still be gotten for a reasonable price. If you’re only looking for a bed, the hostels can be a great deal; there’s often a hostel set up in one of the university dorms, so you can get a private room at a reasonable price if you’re not looking for anything fancy.

Most of all: have fun!!
